Human trafficking investigation underway in Fiji

Police in Fiji are following a group of 20 people, including businessmen, who are allegedly involved in the sale of girls for sex.The Fiji Times reports the Fiji Police’s Human Trafficking Unit is keeping a close watch on the men and is gathering evidence, with a view to interviewing them and laying charges soon. The head of the unit, Inspector Aminiasi Cula, says police have been assisted by the victims of the alleged crimes, and he hopes to obtain further information by the way of mobile phone printouts from the country’s mobile operators.Mr Cula says the operation follows investigations into Fiji’s first domestic human trafficking case earlier this year, and that public awareness of the problem is growing.
