High action in Flag Day volleyball tourneys

The American Volleyball Association (ASVA) and the Islandwide Volleyball Association (IWVA) concluded their Flag Day volleyball tournament with high performances delivered by both local and off-island players from Samoa.

The ASVA used the Tafuna High School gym to hold its tournament, with 8 teams from Samoa, while the IWVA used to the ASCC gym for it tournament with only local volleyball teams.

AMERICAN SAMOA VOLLEYBALL ASSOCIATION FLAG DAY TOURNAMENT

The ASVA 2013 Flag Day tournament called the ‘Pacific Cup Volleyball Challenge’ consisted of 5 different divisions — the Men’s Open Division; Women’s Division; Queens’ Division; Under 19 Boys Division and the Under 13 Boys Division.

The ASVA invited 8 volleyball teams from Samoa to compete in their tournament, with four Samoa teams competing in the Men’s Open Division, two for the Women’s Division and the last two in the Queens’ Division.

After the tournament, only one team from Samoa took back home the perpetual trophy and a $600 cash prize. It was the ‘Stars of Samoa’ from Afega, when they defeated one of the top local volleyball teams, ‘Le Eka’, in a tough match.

In the Men’s Open Division, all four team from Samoa made it to the top 8, where they each faced four local team, and only the Laumua o Tumua team from Afega, Samoa advanced to the final against the ‘Seven Play’ after they both defeated the Tamauli Boyz team in the quarter finals and the Fiafia Boys from Nuuuli in the semi finals.

On the other hand, the Seven Play team defeated one of the top teams from Samoa, Aai o Fiti in the quarter finals, and continued it victory when they also beat the Sideout team in the semi finals, which were the 2012 Flag Day tournament’s defending champion, and advanced to the final against Laumua o Tumau — a team that also played in the finals during last year’s Flag Day tournament, losing the Sideout team. This year was a different story.

In the final match, Seven Play won the first set by 15- 9, but the Laumua o Tumua came back to win the second set 15-10, and in the final set, Seven Play stole the game and became the 2013 Flag Day Tournament champion.

In the women’s division, the Taumafai teams retained their champion when they defeated one of the top team from Samoa, the MYF Aai o Fiti in a tough match in the final. The Taumafai team won 2 of 3 sets to take the title.

The ASVA vice President and Advisor, Valasi Gaisoa thanks all teams from Samoa that took part in this year’s tournament, because without their support and commitment, the tournament would not have been able to go forward. ASVA president Savaliga Afu and treasurer Josie Afu were also present during the tournament, offering their support for the successful tourney.

The Samoa Volleyball Association Board (SVAB) was also present during the whole tournament, which included president Leu Fatu Faamausili, vice president Suailua Pouli Sam Kaleopa and their treasurer Savaii Toomalatai.
