Photos: 29 enter Armed Forces on 113th Flag Day

Twenty nine young men and women took the oath of enlistment for the US Military Armed Forces yesterday during the course of celebrations for the territory's 113th Flag Day.

Congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin administered the oath for the 29 soldiers, which included one enlisting in the Marines and one joining the Air Force.

Sgt 1st Class Ne’emia Vaiaga’e with the Army Recruiting Office, said these young men and women have signed on to take the challenge of serving in the Armed Forces of the United States and are willing to give the ultimate sacrifice when necessary as many have done before them, and that is truly in keeping with the heritage and the warrior spirit of the Samoan people.

He urged the recruits to "be proud that you are Samoan, be proud to be serving in the military services of the United Stated of America, given that America has been good to American Samoa."

The Staff Sgt further stated that on behalf of the Samoan People and the government he wished the new recruits Godspeed and good health as the next generation of Toa o Samoa, and asked that God be with them in their service.

"Be brave, be loyal and be honest” said Staff Sgt Vaiaga’e.

He told Samoa News that of the 29 new recruits, some are still in high school and college while some are working. He said the new army recruits are from the age of 17 to 27 years old. (In order to join the military you must be 17 to 35 years of age.) The Staff Sgt noted that there are are seven females among the new recruits.
