Fire Bureau gets Hazmat command post

The American Samoa Department of Homeland Security (ASDHS) in a collaborative effort with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) Fire Bureau, announced the recent arrival on island of a Hazmat command trailer that will assist Fire Bureau in their response during all hazard emergency situations throughout the territory.

In an initial request made to ASDHS, a grant funding was processed and approved for $57,000. The acquisition and arrival of the Hazmat trailer will serve as a command and communication self-contained mobile unit furnished with work stations, conference table, storage compartments, cabinet/shelving, outlets, lighting, air condition and generator unit among other features.

ASDHS Director, Utuali’I Iuniasolua Savusa commented, “I am very pleased with the outcome of this effort and am sure, that this state-of-the-art designed equipment will serve, assist and enhance capabilities for our emergency response partners.”

In response, Police Commissioner William Haleck of the Department of Public Safety said, “This is an excellent example of collaboration between agencies to leverage resources. I thank ASDHS for this fine piece of equipment that will enable us to better manage hazardous material emergency situations onsite, such incidents as, ammonia, toxic gas leakages, gasoline and diesel spillage and other similar types of emergency situations”.

ASDHS Director Savusa concluded, “I commend and congratulate our staff as well as Department of Public Safety Fire Bureau for making this project a successful reality.”
