Samoa: 60-year-old jailed for raping daughter

A 60-year-old man has been jailed for 20 years for raping his biological 14-year-old daughter.The man, whose name has been withheld to protect the identity of the victim, was convicted of four counts of rape in the Supreme Court. His sentence was delivered by His Honour Justice Vui Clarence Nelson yesterday.According to Justice Vui, the elderly man was not a stranger to the Court.In 2005, he was convicted of having sexual intercourse with a girl from his family and was jailed for two years although he has since been granted parole.Justice Vui said the man’s latest conviction shows he doesn't care and it’s people like him that warrants the call for the establishment of a sex offenders’ registry.The Supreme Court Judge said the Registry is one way of dealing with such predators. He said the defendant’s name should immediately be included in a registry to warn people about him.According to a report from the Probation Office, the defendant is an important orator of his village.The offenses took place in 2012 when the young girl was left at home with her father while her mother went to work.The Court heard that the victim screamed and attempted to resist her father but he wouldn't let up.On one occasion, a matai caught the man raping his daughter and he immediately reported him to the Police.
