PTA’s and others invited to learn about Common Core standards

The Common Core Awareness workshop begins this morning at the Governor H. Rex Lee Auditorium. The workshop is for all Parent Teachers Associations (PTA) involved in government and private schools, according to the Chair of the Common Core Committee in American Samoa, Robert Soliai. An invitation has been extended to the Legislature, House and Senate to attend as well, along with some divisions within the Department of Education.

“This is to provide awareness for parents who can get involved, to make sure they know what the Common Core Standards are and what the students are going to be taught next year. All of the schools have to abide by the same Common Core standards. We want to make everyone aware that we are using these standards before we start implementing them. This is why we are having this conference,” he said.

According to the Common Core Website, www.corestandards.org, the Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.

According to Soliai, there were two Common Core representatives, Rick Melmar and Cathy Cox helping to prepare a Common Core team in a step towards implementing the Common Core for American Samoa. “Train the Trainers” session for the Common Core took place yesterday at the DOE Office in Utulei. “These people will, in turn, be able to train all of the teachers, principals and those in the different divisions of the DOE,” said Soliai.
