AS Junior Tennis Player ranks high in Pacific tournaments
American Samoa Junior Tennis Player, Larry Magalasin, is taking part in the Waikato Christmas Junior Open Tennis Tournament which kicked off Dec 7, 2012 and will continue until Dec 12. Magalasin is competing against some of the Pacific’s best in the Under 14 Boys Division, although he is ranked #1 in the Pacific in the Boys 12 & Under Division.
Magalasin is a member of the American Samoa Tennis Association.
According to an email from Gene Ridgway, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Development Officer for the Pacific Oceania Region, on the first day of play, Magalasin was able to play some energized tennis, hooking left handed forehands into the backhand corner patiently before nailing inside out or down the line forehands into the open court. Magalasin was able to earn a 7-5, 7-5 victory in this 1st round, over Tieman Breen, who was last year’s Pacific Team member now living in New, Caledonia.
“Day one was finished with some gutsy tennis being played in very tough cold and wet weather conditions,” said Ridgway
Magalasin’s second round match was against the #15 seed Zac Urquhart that took place on Friday, Dec 6, 2012. New Zealand is ahead of American Samoa by 24 hours with the match taking place Saturday in New Zealand and Friday in American Samoa.
Magalasin gained recognition when he earned the #1 ranking in the Pacific in the Boys 12 & Under Division when he defeated the then #1 ranked Michael Emery from Tahiti in October of this year in the International Tennis Federation 12 & Under Junior Tennis Championships in Noumea, New Caledonia.
