BGCAS donates $1,000 to Hurricane Sandy Relief

The Boys & Girls Clubs of American Samoa recently donated a $1,000 to the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund, according to  Executive Officer, Tupua Roy Fua.

“As many of us are aware, Hurricane Sandy ripped through the north eastern region of the United States and is documented as the largest hurricane on record and the costliest with estimates of $50 billion in damages,” he said.

Tupua noted that “a notice from Jim Clark, President and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America provided a list of BGCA clubs which received considerable damage from high winds and tidal surge from the storm. Numerous clubs are unable to reopen and many are still waiting for repair and replacement estimates.”

In response, he said, “the young boys & girls of our local club worked together to raise funds to help their brothers and sisters from the East Coast, notwithstanding logistics and the fact that we are located in the South Pacific. Over the past few weeks, club members with support from their parents and families, hosted bake sales and conducted a penny drive to raise money for the cause.

“The Torch Club, which focuses on character, leadership and service for ages 11 to 13, also met and donated $100 from its special project fund to assist with relief efforts. In total the BGCAS club members raised $349.00.”

The BGCAS Executive Officer said, “Under the leadership of the Board Chairperson First Lady Mary A.T. Tulafono, the Board of Directors unanimously supported the local club’s initiative and voted to provide matching funds to bring the total donation from the BGCAS to $1,000.00.

“The $1,000 check payable to the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund is being sent priority express to BGCA Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. All donated funds will be used exclusively to help Clubs rebuild, resupply and get back to serving the thousands of children whose lives are disrupted by the massive storm.”

On behalf of the First Lady, Tupua stated, “during this time of crisis, loss and despair for the many children and families victimized by Hurricane Sandy, we are pleased to make a contribution on behalf of the Boys & Girls Clubs of American Samoa.  We wish to thank parents and families of our club members, mentor sand donors for their support. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.”
