Samoa and American Samoa explore economic integration

The Samoa government has sent two officials to American Samoa recently to identify the most suitable form of formal bilateral economic integration to enhance trade and investment opportunities between the two Samoas. An official with Samoa’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Aida Savea, says they had wanted to confirm whether American Samoa can enter into a bilateral economic arrangement without the involvement of Washington. She says what businesses in both American Samoa and Samoa want is transparency and certainty through some sort of a formal economic agreement.Ms Savea says a lot more work needs to be done by both sides with regards to what goods and services would be included in such an arrangement.A follow-up meeting is planned for October.
