FOUR WILDCATS GIVEN SODEXO AND CULINARY SCHOLARSHIPS

This past Wednesday morning at the Nu’uuli Vocational Technical High School Office, Sodexo representative Nancy Tinitali along with Top Chef Sualua of the Culinary Academy presented four scholarships —  two $1,000 scholarships and two $500 scholarships awards to four students from NVTHS, who will be attending the American Samoa Community College in the upcoming semester.

Samoa News spoke to Nu’uuli Vocational Technical High School Principal Saouila Kava, on this opportunity for her graduated seniors.

“This morning we’re privileged to have a representative from Sodexo, Nancy Tinitali and Chef Sualua from the Culinary Academy here to bring those scholarships to our senior students. They presented four scholarships today — two one thousand dollar scholarships and two five hundred dollar scholarships, for our students who will be attending the American Samoa Community College. They have done this for the last three years, and they have been handing out more financial aid each year to help our students. We are privileged and our students are thankful for these scholarships, which will help them with their schooling in family consumer science, cooking and hospitality.”

Kava elaborated on some of the main requirements four these scholarships: “Number one is the teacher recommendation from Mrs. Sala Maiava from their time spent in class... and in the second semester their participation in the school to work programs and the various government and local businesses courses.”

Kava shared with Samoa News how these unique scholarships affect the students of NVTHS — their benefits.

“This is the third year that Sodexo has provided scholarships, and I think this is a great opportunity for our students in the area of food services and hospitality. With this, the students will work harder, so if they want to further their education in that area, they can do so. They can be cooks in many industries, or they can even open their own business. Of course, they will be good cooks for their families too.”

Kava wanted to acknowledge the people who have helped make these opportunities possible.

“I give a lot of credit to our Family Consumer Science teacher Mrs. Maiava for approaching Chef Sualua three years ago asking for scholarships for her students. She’s been doing this for years... her students would bake cookies and whatever profits were made she would use that to award her top students.”

She added, “I give a lot of credit also to Chef Sualua, who at that time, worked with Sodexo and the Department of Education’s Lunch Program, and now he’s branched out and has his own business, which is the Culinary Academy, where our people go to learn about cooking and hospitality. I also give a lot of credit to the parents who are supportive of their children in this area, because nutrition is important, so hats off to everyone — especially the Department of Education and everyone involved.”
