Japanese cruise ship arrives to empty dock

The American Samoa Visitor’s Bureau confirmed yesterday that the Japanese cruise ship, Nippon Maru is calling in to the Port of Pago Pago today and it arrived around 8 a.m. for an eight-hour visit.  But unlike most crusie ship visits, no vendors or entertainers were there to greet them.

The Nippon Maru, which visits Pago Pago every two years, comes from Fiji and departs later this afternoon for French Polynesia. The Visitor’s Bureau said the last time this ship was in port was in 2010.

Total number of passengers and crew members were not be available, but this a smaller cruise ship compared to others that have visited the territory this year. The Nippon Maru can carry up to 523 passengers and 224 crew members, and this small number may have been the reason for the lack of interest.

Like everyone else in the territory, the Visitor’s Bureau is hoping for good weather today, so that our visitors will enjoy themselves on our shores.

As of yesterday, the weather service says a ridge of high pressure extending from the southwest will bring stable weather conditions by today with winds at 15-20mph.
