Warriors atop boys HS soccer standings
The Tafuna Warriors are now No. 1 in the standings of the ASHSAA Boys 11-a-side competition with a 5-point lead over the Faga’itua Vikings.
Tafuna (6-2-0, 20 points) gained an extra three after a tough 2-0 win over the Kananafou Stallions on April 11 in the first match played since all high school sports were called off during the Easter week.
Points are three for a win, one for a draw and zero for losses.
The schedule resumed this week with the revised schedule now setting the two round-robin competition to end May 1 with the playoffs set for May 3 and the title match on May 5.
Faga’itua’s (5-0-1, 15 points) voluntary forfeit to the Warriors for the first round was key in handing Tafuna the top spot. The Vikings also have another scheduled voluntary forfeiture to Tafuna for the second round.
However, ASHSAA has decreed that Tafuna and Leone will not qualify for the playoffs due to disciplinary measures.
With 15 points Faga’itua is in 2nd place while the Nu’uuli Wildcats (3-3-2, 12 points) are third; followed by the Crusaders (2-3-2, 9 points) in fourth; Samoana Sharks (2-2-2, 8 points) in fifth; Leone Lions (2-0-4, 6 points) in sixth; 7th is Kananafou (1-2-4, 3 points) and finally Iakina (1-0-7) in 8th place.
The revamped schedule now has games everyday of the week and Saturdays in order to complete the season before the end of the school year.
With Tafuna and Leone not qualified for the postseason, the top four teams for the playoffs are No. 1 Faga’itua, No. 2 Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats; No. 3 Fa’asao-Marist and No. 4 Samoana.
Samoana (4-0-0, 12 points) still leads the division while Leone (3-0-1, 9 points) is a close second.
In third is Tafuna (2-1-2, 7 points) while Faga’itua (2-1-2, 7 points) is fifth and the Wildcats (0-0-5) is sixth.
The team finishing with the best record will be crowned champions of the division.
