The Department of Public Safety is preparing for the numerous guests who are invited to celebrate the marking of the 112 years since American Samoa became a territory of the United States of America. Acting Police Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, Leiseau Laumoli, with the Flag Day celebration commencing on April 17th and 18th, 2012,  there will be “No Liberty” for all Police Officers.

The Acting Commissioner explained that “no liberty” means that every police officer cannot take leave unless it’s an emergency. Leiseau said the Criminal Intelligence Division will be in charge of escorting dignitaries and guests from overseas. “The detectives are well equipped to manage and provide proper security measures and proper personal protection required for off-island delegations and officials”. 

Head of the Traffic Division Ta’aloloioufaiva Lt John Cendrowski told Samoa News the traffic division’s enforcement for the Flag day is under for already from April 12 up to April 19, 2012. 

Ta’aloloioufaiva said the enforcement the officers will look out for speed violators, those who will not wear seatbelts, child restraints, with the main target for driving under the influence.

“The main purpose for this seven day enforcement is to ensure the safety for members of the public when they are enjoying the flag day festivities and the fun that comes with it. “It’s also a time where the citizens need to be alert to the possibility of crimes We can never be too careful, too prepared or too aware.

Ta’aloloioufaiva urges members of the public when you park your car while attending the flag day celebrations make sure to keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your car and set your alarm.

“Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or with children inside.

“Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car, this creates a temptation for thieves. “If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight”, warns the head of traffic”.

Ta’aloloioufaiva told Samoa News that last year according to traffic reports there were nor many DUI cases and he hopes that will not be the case this coming Flag day. The Lieutenant appeals to the public when they consume alcohol do not drive, have a designated driver.

“When there are drunk a drivers operating their vehicles on the main road, everyone that is on the road is at risk, please when you drink don’t drive, it’s simple as that”. The District Court and the High Court will be closed during the flag day on April 17, 18, 2012. Anyone arrested on Monday will remain at the Tafuna Correctional Facility for two days and will make appearance in the District on Thursday.
