Fagaitua HS tops 2012 JROTC Challenge

This year featured another top title for the Eastern Star communities, as the Fagaitua Vikings claimed the title for the “2012 Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Cadet Challenge”, that was held last Friday at the Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tafuna.

This year’s challenge was co-hosted by Kanana Fou and Manu’a High School.

Kanana Fou’s Sergeant First Class Sapatu Moli told Samoa News “the cadet challenge consists of five events, this morning we started out with our mile run for men and women, then on to our V-Sit category, our shuttle run which is a twenty five meter run, and our third event is the pull ups for the males and the flex arm hang for the females, our last event was the curl ups, which is an alternate of the sit ups.”

SFC Moli explained they had six schools competing this year, “Manu’a, Fagaitua, Samoana, Tafuna, Leone, and of course our program from Kanana Fou as we are co hosting with Manu’a.” He added “the rules of our event are that each JROTC program has to bring in eleven females, and eleven males, and each of them include a substitute, as all 11 individuals have to compete in every event.”

Friday’s event started a little late. “This morning we experienced a bit of rain, which had us wait for the track to dry up, also we had to wait on the EMS to arrive, because we cannot coordinate these competitive physical events without medical attention nearby, for the safety of the cadets.”

The goal of these annual events, is to “keep the cadets in good shape, stay fit, and also that’s part of the program, the curriculum is PT, so we have to have physical conditionals for these cadets in top shape,” said SFC Moli.

SFC Moli thanked the EMS and Stadium crews at the event, the DOE School Buses for taking them around and Colonel Jamias and his staff for all their assistance to coordinate this event.”

SFC Sapatu Moli told Samoa News the results on Monday show Fagaitua High School’s JROTC Program as the Overall Winner of the event, second place went to Samoana High School, Kanana Fou High School was third.

Manu’a High School secured fourth place, fifth place went to the Leone Lions, and the Tafuna Warriors pulled up the rear in sixth place.
