Dr. Salu Hunkin teams with CSM Savusa in Gov race

A small group of families and friends, along with a handful of journalists gathered Saturday morning (Feb. 25) at Vailoa village to hear veteran educator Dr. Salu Hunkin announce that she is a candidate for governor in the 2012 Gubernatorial race. “I have been encouraged for years by close friends, relatives and colleagues to run for office. Today, I wish to announced that NOW IS THE TIME to answer this call - to provide our people with a different perspective about the kind of leadership that will lead us to a peaceful, prosperous and principle centered government,” she said. The former president of the American Samoa Community College then officially introduced her running mate, Command Sergeant Mayor Iuni Savusa, who has served in the U.S. Army for over 36 years. Savusa – a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, told the gathering that it was only four days after he officially retired from the military that he was asked to be Hunkin’s running mate. He said he gladly accepts the post. Hunkin pointed out that “Iuni has a wealth of more than 36 years of experience, management, planning and assessment, training and mobilizing personnel serving our people through his duties as a military warrior.” Theme of the team’s campaign this year: “Ua o’o i le taimi” or “Now is the time.” Monday’s edition will have more details from Saturday’s event.
