Guam welcomes American Samoa workers for 6-Month construction training program

Guam - Guam is welcoming 30 participants from American Samoa who will be the first workers to benefit from a regional workforce center.

The workers will be the first students at a new regional training center created through the efforts of  the Guam and American Samoan Governments.The aim of the program is to provide the workers with the construction skills they need to get a job.

The 6 month training program is a public-private partnership between the Government of American Samoa, the Ukudu Workforce Housing and Training Village and the Center for Micronesian Empowerment. It is being funded through a $665,000 federal grant given to American Samoa after a tsunami that devastated the territory in 2009.

They 30 workers are arriving at the Guam International Airport at 8:45 pm this evening, Saturday February 25.  Acting Governor Ray Tenorio, along with the Chairperson for the Center for Micronesian Empowerment, Maria Connelly and other members of Guam's the American Samoan community will be on hand for the welcoming.

The center was created with the support of  American Samoa Governor Togiola Tulafono and Guam Governor Eddie Calvo.
