ASHSAA BASKETBALL REGULAR SEASON PLAY FINISHING UP

The American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) basketball season is coming to head in the regular season, with final make up games slated for today and tomorrow.     

Today, the Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats will be traveling to Samoana High School to take on the Sharks, while the Tafuna Warriors will be at the Lions Den, to take on Leone on their home turf. Tomorrow, the Warriors will be traveling once again, but this time it will be to Fa’asao Marist High School to face with the Crusaders.

The Samoana Sharks pulled out victories in both the Varsity and Junior Varsity games on Thursday evening.

In the Varsity match up, both defenses stepped up to the challenge, as this was low scoring at the beginning of the game and going into the second half. The Vikings were led by Joshua Lafoai, who finished the night with 8 points and was the scoring leader for both teams.

Leading the way for the Sharks in scoring was Uesili Konelio, who was able to connect on two three-pointers, finishing with 6 points. The Vikings were able to keep it close in the first half, while in the second half, it was all Sharks, as they finished the night on top by downing the Vikings by a score of 33-24.

In the Junior Varsity game, the Sharks walked away with a four-point victory, when they downed the Vikings 23-19. Leading all scores was the Sharks’ Rasheed Liu who sank in 9 total points, despite going 0 for 6 in free throws in the 4th period.

The Varsity playoffs and championships have been moved up to next Wednesday, Feb. 22 for the playoffs and Friday, Feb. 24 for the championships.

The playoffs will have the top four seeded teams, with the #1 seeded team vs. the #4 seeded team at the #1 seeded team’s gymnasium, while the #2 seeded team will face off with the #3 seeded team at the #2 seeded team’s gymnasium.

The same format will be used for the championship day on Friday, Feb. 24, with the game taking place at the highest seeded team’s gymnasium.
