ASHSAA BASKETBALL ROUND UP

As in any sporting event of any caliber —when you have two rival teams pitted against one another, especially when both teams are on the top of their game— no doubt there will be sparks flying, with the intensity of a world championship bout.

Such was the case this past Monday evening, as two top teams and rivals, the Samoana Sharks and the Tafuna Warriors battled it out in the American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) boys basketball game held at Samoana High School, in Varsity and Junior Varsity action, in this last week of the regular season games before the playoffs start next week.

In the Varsity match up, the host school Samoana was able to squeeze out a narrow victory by one point, as the Sharks earned their win with a score of 42-41. The Sharks were led by Buddy Tuamasaga who scored 16 points. Tuamasaga was able to knock down 7 baskets, but was only 2 for 10 on the free throw line.

Going into the half, the Warriors had the momentum and appeared to keep it at the start of the 3rd period behind their high scorer, Arona Arona Jr. who finished the night with 14 points for Warriors. Late in the 3rd period, the Sharks gained the momentum back in their favor, when soon after a seesaw battle began that came down to the last shot of the game with the ball in the Warriors’ possession, as they failed on a last second shot just behind the three point, giving the victory to the Sharks.

In the Junior Varsity game, the top ranked Sharks had trouble from the beginning of this game, while going 2 for 18 on the free throw line and missing numerous shots, as they were downed by the Warriors by a score of 31-24.
