Samoa Sevens head coach made one change to squad.
Samoa Sevens Head Coach Stephen Betham has made one change to his sevens squad to this weekend’s IRB Sevens Series, 11th tournament in Las Vegas.
Levi Asi Fa’amatala is being replaced by Paul Perez, who joined the team in Vegas earlier this week. Speaking from Las Vegas, Betham says, Day One of the tournament is very important to the team. “It’s a must win situation for Samoa, and we have to make the quarterfinals”
“It’s a tough pool against New Zealand, and Australia who is at present ranked higher than us on the tournament table, but it does not mean we are going to underestimate Japan, we are focusing first against Japan.”
Samoa who is now ranked 6th from 8th after the Wellington Sevens determines to make the top 5 before the last half of the IRB Series. “We have to maintain consistency throughout the remaining Legs of the Series, win or not to win we cannot afford to be dropped out of top 5” added Betham.
Meanwhile Betham will finalise his starting team today. He says apart from Faatoina Autagavaia who had a slight calf injury but nothing serious, all the players are fit and well.
Samoa’s first game against Japan will be on Saturday 11th February at 4.34pm local time and Australia at 7.30pm. Day 2 on Sunday 12th will be against New Zealand at 12.00 in the afternoon local time.
