Allegations of police misconduct surface

Two police officers are at the center of a police investigation on allegations that they took two iPods in connection with a stolen property case from a store last year.

This has been confirmed from a government official who asked for anonymity because this person is not authorized to speak about the investigation at this time.

The government official said a local store filed a complaint with police last year about minors who allegedly stole two iPods from the store, and police were contacted. The minors were taken in for questioning, along with the iPods.

This was uncovered when the store officials were making follow-up inquiries with the Department of Public Safety on the status of their case. They discovered that there is no case record of stolen iPods — each iPod is estimated to cost close to $200.

Samoa News understands that this specific case has no records at all. The government official said the Criminal Intelligence Division (CID) is investigating this matter.

The spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety, Deputy Commissioner Leiseau Laumoli is off-island. Calls and messages to CID Captain Lavata’i Taase Sagapolutele were unsuccessful as of press time.

The last police misconduct case was prosecuted, and landed former Police Lieutenant Ray Noa in jail after he was convicted of assaulting another man.
