Samoa Bowl golf tourney raises funds for athletes

The American Samoa Football Coaches Association, Department of Education and Parent Teacher Association, held their Samoa Bowl X Golf Tournament this past Saturday at the IliIli Golf course, with all proceeds going towards the support to send the American Samoa All Star Football team to Brisbane, Australia next month February.

The All Star Football team is to play in the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Oceania Championships ‘Under 19’ football game against the Australian All Star Football/Gridiron team. The winning team of this game will be qualified to represent Oceania in the IFAF Junior World Championships that will be in the State of Ohio, in June 2012.

At the first edition of the IFAF Junior World Championship (IFAF JWC) that took place in 2009 in Canton, Ohio, New Zealand represented Oceania.

New Zealand qualified to represent Oceania when they defeated Australia 12-7, but failed to medal after losing all their games and placing last in a field of eight teams, with host nation of the United States taking 1st place, Canada 2nd and Japan 3rd.

At the last Samoa Bowl (IX) Golf Tournament, during the latter part of 2011, over $25,000 was raised, with some of the funds being used for this Australian IFAF trip and the Samoa Bowl IX week that was held on December 26- January 2, 2011. The total amount of funds raised this past Saturday for the Samoa Bowl X Golf Tournament is still being tallied at this time.
