ASHSAA 2011-2012 season in 3rd week of action

The American Samoa High School Athletic Association's (ASHSAA) 2011-2012 boys basketball season, just completed its third week of action, with eight competing schools, six of which have Varsity and Junior Varsity squads and two, Manumalo Baptist Academy and South Pacific Academy, having only Varsity squads.

In this past Thursday’s Varsity and Junior Varsity action, Samoana Sharks was able to down the Faga’itua Vikings in the Varsity match up, 42-30, as well as in the Junior Varsity game, 32-25.

The Sharks and Vikings Varsity game was a seesaw battle, with the lead changing back and forth several times. Finally in the middle of the 4th period, the Sharks pulled ahead and kept the lead, ending the game with a twelve point victory. Leading scorer for the Sharks was Buddy Tuamasaga (#25) who knocked down 14 points, with teammate Fatu Tunufai (#24) right behind him, who finished the night with 13 points of his own.

The Vikings Gordon Luafulu (#5) led his team with 14 points. The Senior was 3 of 5 from the free throw line and even hit a 3 pointer late in the 3rd period, while hitting 4 baskets inside the paint.

In the Junior Varsity game, it was pretty much the same scenario, as both teams kept it close until towards the end, as the Sharks kept up the same pace they had from the start of the game, which appeared to tire the Vikings out, leaving the Sharks with wide open shots, which they took advantage of and pulled ahead late in the game keeping the lead until the end.

In other action Thursday, the Leone Lions Varsity squad was able to take advantage of a smaller Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats team, defeating the Wildcats,49-37. Despite the quickness of the Wildcats, they were not able of overcome the size of the Lions.

In the Junior Varsity match up between these two teams, it was a different story. The quickness of the Wildcats was able to pull in a draw with the Lions when both teams walked off the court in a tied ball game, 27-27.
