Preview: Togiola reviews progress at Samoa Tuna Processors plant

Yesterday afternoon, Gov. Togiola Tulafono toured the Tri Marine owned, Samoa Tuna Processors plant site, to review its progress in becoming a fully operating cannery, which will not only process fish for cans and possibly pouches, but will continue to supply ‘fresh fish’ markets overseas — something they are currently doing.

On hand for the tour, were the the company’s top officials, which included Tri Marine’s Managing Director Joe Hamby and Vice President of Productions, Dan Sullivan. The Fono has been asking about the cannery’s progress, noting that they see no change from the initial progress report they received last year.

Samoa Tuna Processors is currently employing 30+ people, including security guards, as it handles fresh fish from longliners to be ‘air cargo’ shipped to markets in Los Angeles, Calif., Tokyo, Japan, and others for the sashimi market and restaurants.

Samoa News was asked to tag along on the tour, and was able to speak with the governor and the top officials of the cannery on the progress at the local plant site.

During the tour, the governor saw Paramount Builders, a local construction company, making headway on the building site area of the cold storage facility (5,500 metric ton capacity) — which the company needs to begin its long term plans to process fish for cans and possibly pouches.

The processing of the ‘fresh fish’ quality fish for air cargo shipment was also witnessed by Togiola, with ‘moon fish’ being in this particular batch — fresh of the longliner, docked at Samoa Tuna Processors unloading bay — and being readied for an air cargo shipment, today.

Samoa News will report details of the tour in Saturday and Monday’s editions.
