DPW vacuum truck should help with flood prevention

The long awaited new vacuum truck for the Department of Public Works arrived early last week and was tested last Friday in the Ottoville area, which is one of the worst hit areas for flooding during and after heavy rains.

“The new vacuum truck will definitely help with cleaning and maintaining problem areas such as the Ottoville drainage in front of the LDS Mormon Church, Hope House, Cost U Less, and other cesspool areas throughout the island,” wrote Tualauta Reps. Larry Sanitoa and Tapumanaia Galu Satele Jr. in an e-mail last Friday to DPW director Taeaotui Punaofo Tilei.

“Economically, it’s a great investment as well because the cost of redesigning and rebuilding of the Ottoville and Hope House drainages was close to $1 million,” the letter states. “This new equipment will now help with cleaning existing drainage instead of rebuilding them.
