Funding next step for Tonga games committee

The Secretary General of the Tonga National Olympic Committee says funding is the next stage for his committee in hosting the 2019 Pacific Games.

Tonga and Tahiti were both vying to host the games and each gave a 30 minute presentation to delegates at the Pacific Games Council’s General Assembly in Wallis and Futuna.

The delegates voted 16-6 in favour of Tonga.

The country will now need to find a budget of 70 million US dollars for the various construction of sports facilities and operational expenses for hosting the Games.

Secretary General Takitoa Taumoepeau says when they are back in Tonga they will present a report to key stakeholders.

He says they will also be talking to the government about the next step.

“I think the other good thing is that we do not need to reinvent the wheel here but just speak to the our other countries who have hosted.”

Takitoa Taumoepeau says this is the biggest event Tonga has hosted.
