Ohana Running Club invites community to join Pumpkin Fun Run next Monday

On Monday, Oct. 22 at the Veterans Memorial Stadium, the American Samoa Athletics (ASA) will be sponsoring a Free Pumpkin Fun Run and Track Meet.

“We invite the community to come and participate in the fall track meet as well as learn about the great things we are doing with the kids,” said Coach, Trainer and Manager of the Ohana Running Club, Clayton ‘Boom’ Mahuka.

The local Ohana Running Club and volunteers will be partnering with the ASA to coordinate the different track and field competitions. They will also serve as officials to help determine the winners of each event.

According to Mahuka, in an effort to prepare runners for the fun run and track meet and to promote the sport that has improved conditioning and overall fitness of Ohana Running Club members, training sessions continue every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. The Monday and Wednesday training is held at the Veterans Memorial Stadium, while the Friday training is at the Office of  Motor Vehicles (OMV) driving course.

“If you feel that you have talent and skills running in field events, come out and compete. It is never too late to improve your health fitness,” said Mahuka.

Competition will begin at 4:00 p.m. and will last until around 6:30 p.m. Events will include the 50 yard dash, 100 meter run, 200 meter run, 400 meter run, 800 meter run, 50 yard relay, discus throw and shot put throw.

Mahuka stated that support from the community has been great, but they can always use more, as well as support teaching anyone interested in the fine art of running and the sport of track and field.

With continued help from the local American Samoa National Olympic Committee and other organizations, Mahuka looks forward to seeing more and more locally trained athletes compete representing American Samoa in international events such as the South Pacific Games, Oceania Championships and the Olympics.
