No. 1 spots up for grabs in President’s Cup group play

The top spot for the four pools are up for grabs in the final round of group play for the men’s 2012 FFAS National Cup Tournament scheduled for Oct. 27 at Pago Park Soccer Stadium.

The teams finishing on top of their pool qualify for the playoffs scheduled for Nov. 22, Thanksgiving Day.

POOL A

Black Roses and Utulei Youth are tied for the lead with four points each, with the former holding the difference in goals tiebreaker (3-2) for pole position.  These two teams play against one another with the winner advancing to the playoffs.

The other two teams are FC SKBC and PanSa with the SKBC team having an outside shot at winning the pool.

FC SKBC would need to beat PanSa by four goals to win the group and hope for a draw in the Black Roses-Utulei Youth match in order for them to take the top spot in Pool A.

Both games will be played simultaneously at 12:10 p.m. on Saturday.

POOL B

Lion Heart A leads the four teams with 6 points, followed by Vaitogi United and Ilaoa & To’omata with 3 each.

Between Vaitogi and Ilaoa & To’omata the former has the more realistic chance of winning the group and to do that they will have to beat Lion Heart A.

Vaitogi’s magic number is eight; they must beat Lion Heart A by eight goals in order to win the group by a difference in goals and advance to the playoffs.

Ilaoa & To’omata’s situation is tougher because their goals differential is in the negative with -6.

POOL C

Taputimu Youth is in control of its own destiny after downing Pago Youth A in a thrilling 2-1 match during their second round meeting.  Many in the association have tabbed that as the best game of the year to date.

A win or a draw will see Taputimu Youth through to the playoffs.

Pago A takes on Pago B and all they can do to help their cause is to trounce their club’s second team with goals galore and hope for a Vaiala Tongan upset over Taputimu.  Goals differential would come in to play again if this scenario occurs.

POOL D

Atu’u Broncos also sits atop this group with 6 points followed by Tafuna Jets with 3.

They will take on Green Bay and a win or draw will see them through to the next phase of the competition.

Tafuna takes on Kiwi Soccers and will have to hope to score a bunch of goals against their opponent while at the same time hoping for a Green Bay win.
