NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARIES CELEBRATE 40TH ANNIVERSARY

This past Monday there was a celebration of the 40th Anniversary of National Marine Sanctuaries’ that was held at the Tauese P. F. Sunia Ocean Center. The celebration was coordinated by the Department of Commerce, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

During the celebration on Monday, there were trivia games for the kids concerning sanctuaries, entertainment and food on hand and a tour of the center where the main attraction was the ‘Science on a Sphere’ global display system.

According to the National Marine Sanctuaries website, www.sanctuaries.noaa.gov, on October 23, 1972 the National Marine Sanctuaries Act was signed, initiating ocean protection and conservation at a scope and scale never seen before. The National Marine Sanctuary Program oversees 14 marine protected areas that encompass more than 150,000 square miles of marine waters, including the Great Lakes, in the United States.

The Tauese P. F. Sunia Ocean Center provides visitors and residents alike with the opportunity to learn about the natural and cultural resources of American Samoa. The state-of-the-art facility features educational exhibits and interactive learning tools to promote ocean awareness and encourage good marine stewardship.
