Morning landslide dislodges boulder

A landslide in Fatu-ma-Futi caused traffic to back up — on both lanes — around 8:30 a.m., yesterday morning. Fortunately no one was injured. This was confirmed by John Vaifanua, Department of Homeland Security’s Field Coordinator, who was at the scene when Samoa News arrived.

Vaifanua told Samoa News the landslide occurred because the water seeped into the mountain making the ground unstable. Heavy rains were part of last night’s weather and apparently the cause of the boulder that slipped down the mountain..

“We will definitely conduct a thorough assessment of this mountain to assure that this does not repeat. Luckily no one was injured given that there are homes near this area,” he said.
