Malaeimi couple held on allegations of assault

A couple, in their 40s, has been arrested and are being held behind bars on a no bail status on allegations that they assaulted a man who was stabbed in the neck during an altercation.

Tuasivi and her husband Sionesipa Faoliu of Malaeimi spent Sunday in jail, and the couple is facing charges of third degree assault and public peace disturbance, however the Attorney General’s office is looking at filing additional charges in this matter.

According to the government’s case, the victim was heading to the Faoliu residence to get his wife, who had been playing cards there, however while approaching the house, the victim was attacked by Faoliu’s dog. It’s alleged that the victim asked Faoliu (the husband) as to why he did not attempt to stop his dogs, and asked “if the dogs are even registered.”

Court filings say this upset Faoliu who then punched the victim in the face, and then they fought. It’s alleged that this fight led to Faoliu stabbing the victim with a kitchen knife. Police spoke to Faoliu who stated that when the victim was attacked by the dogs, he went into the house and was yelling at him (Faoliu) and that’s why he got upset and assaulted the victim. Faoliu also admitted that he struck the defendant with a beer bottle.

The victim, however has a different account of what occurred. Court filings say that when the fight occurred, Mrs. Faoliu and other bystanders tried to break up the fight and it is alleged that is when Mrs. Faoliu struck the victim with a beer bottle, while the husband stabbed the victim in his neck.

Police took into evidence the kitchen knife, which has been submitted to the Custodian of Evidence. It’s alleged that the victim was taken to the hospital where he was found to have sustained multiple abrasions on his chest and neck area which required three stitches, and a laceration on his head, which required four stitches.
