American Samoa native, Janelle F.B. Etelagi, who is a law student at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa William S. Richardson School of Law has been selected as a member of the Board of the Asian-Pacific Law & Policy Journal (APLPJ).

“I was selected as Staff Editor last summer and [now] I got on the board for my last year. So far, I'm the only Samoan on the Board,” she told her parents, Vaivao and Maleifuamai,  in an e-mail last month after being informed by the university of the appointment, which was then officially announced publicly this week. The parents shared the email with Samoa News.

“Our daughter is one of four law students..traveling to Chicago to represent the William S. Richardson School of Law...for the law students competition this week,” said Vaivao.

“We, as parents, are very happy and proud to make this announcement for the achievement that our daughter has made for this year, 2013,” he said.  Janelle is from the villages of Pago Pago, Faleasao and Fogagogo.

APLPJ is a web-based, American legal journal covering issues in Asia and the Pacific Rim, according to the UH website. Its objectives are to disseminate legal research by law professors, legal practitioners, social scientists, economists, and students; to increase awareness of legal issues impacting the region; and to provide a forum to discuss legal topics that fall within the Journal’s geographic scope.
