Tapa’au: “Acts of self-determination extend beyond politics and government”

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Governor’s 2018 Youth Empowerment Summit is set for this upcoming week with the theme, “Self-Determination and Hope”, and is spearheaded by the ASG Office of Political Status, Constitutional Review & Federal Relations, which is led by Tapa’au Dr. Daniel Aga.

Tapa’au serves as chairman of the Youth Summit and his office is organizing the summit in conjunction with other ASG entities, such as the Department of Education, American Samoa Community College, Department of Youth and Women’s Affairs and the Election Office.

“The Summit will focus on political status and constitutional topics but it is important to note that acts of self-determination extend beyond politics and government,” Tapa’au explained.

“They extend to villages, families, and individuals seeking to gain control of their lives and realize their dreams,” he said yesterday, adding that the summit will open Sunday, July 1, with a church service at the Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa at Fagatogo starting at 2p.m.

CCCAS Fagatogo Rev. Iasepi Ulu will conduct the service and set the tone for the summit, for July 2 and 3 at Pago Pago Youth Center. More details later this week in Samoa News on the summit program, including sessions and keynote speakers. The final day of the summit includes games/activities at the soccer field at Pago Pago.

Tapa’au noted that Rev. Ulu’s many years as an educator and work with American Samoa’s youth is well known in the community. “Rev. Iasepi Ulu’s spiritual guidance, experience and wisdom will set the tone for the rest of the Youth Summit,” said Tapa’au, who’s office has been tasked by Gov. Lolo to conduct public awareness programs to reach all sectors of the community, including private schools and out in villages.

During a cabinet meeting in late April this year, Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga revealed the planned youth summit, to explore issues such as political status and American Samoa’s relationship with the United States and to expand the theme of the Flag Day 2018 celebration of “Tupulaga mo le Lumana’i” or “Youth for the Future”.

At last month’s United Nation Decolonization Committee, Attorney General Talauega Eleasalo Ale, informed the Pacific Seminar about the Youth Summit “to explore issues of political status, constitutional amendments, and issues regarding our relationship with the United States.”
