Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Samoa's Consul General to American Samoa, Fata Brian Kaio, has officially reaffirmed the invitation extended by the Prime Minister of Samoa to the top five fautasi that participated in the recent Flag Day race. This invitation represents a significant gesture to nurture goodwill and strengthen the cultural and historical ties between Samoa and American Samoa, both of which share deep-rooted connections through their traditions and heritage.

During a prize-giving ceremony held at the Office of Samoan Affairs, Fata elaborated on the Samoa government's comprehensive plans designed to facilitate the participation of the fautasi. He expressed hope that the villages that own these traditional longboats would consider accepting the invitation to celebrate and honor their shared cultural heritage.

In a detailed letter addressed to Chief of Staff Leonard Seumanutafa, Fata underscored the various forms of assistance available to support the transportation and participation of the fautasi coming from American Samoa. He outlined critical logistical considerations, including transportation capabilities and support services, to ensure a smooth transition for both the boats and their crews.

Dated April 20, 2026, Fata's letter also conveyed his warm congratulations to American Samoa for successfully executing the 126th Flag Day celebration. He praised the exceptional planning and execution carried out by the Office of the Governor, noting that the event was marked by seamless coordination, efficient logistics, and a vibrant display of cultural pride that resonated throughout the community.

In reiterating the Prime Minister's invitation, Fata extended a heartfelt welcome to the top five fautasi from American Samoa to participate in the 64th Independence Anniversary celebrations in Samoa this June. He provided a thorough overview of the logistical arrangements established by the Samoa government. These arrangements include provisions for the transportation of the fautasi to and from Samoa, as well as accommodation for the crews of each longboat during their stay.

Furthermore, the Samoa government has taken proactive steps to ensure the comfort and safety of the crews by providing suitable accommodation in designated villages within the Apia Urban Area, specifically in the vibrant Faleata and Vaimauga Districts. This arrangement aims to provide a proper and welcoming place for the teams to reside while they engage in the festivities.

In addition to accommodation, the Government of Samoa is committed to assisting villages in effectively hosting the crews. This includes implementing 24-hour security by the Samoa Police at a designated area in Mulinuu, which will serve as the central base for the fautasi. To meet their needs, the Samoa Police will also provide necessary amenities, including tents for shelter and storage solutions for the boats.

To further streamline the participation process, the government plans to grant permit waivers for all crew members. This initiative will allow up to 60 individuals per fautasi to participate without facing the usual bureaucratic hurdles that can often complicate travel and participation.

Recognizing the importance of clear communication and coordination, Fata has proposed organizing a meeting with the relevant management teams of the fautasi.

This meeting will serve as a platform for open discussion, allowing all parties to address any questions or concerns about the preparations. It will also ensure that everyone is well-informed and fully prepared for the upcoming events surrounding the celebrations, ultimately fostering a spirit of collaboration and unity between Samoa and American Samoa.
