Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Kevin and Amy are the most popular baby names — number one on the list in 2017 for the U.S. territories — American Samoa, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and US Virgin Islands, according to data released last week by the US Social Security Administration, which notes that “other territories” are less populated and have relatively few births.”

The US territory of Puerto Rico has its own separate list, according to SSA data.

The annual list provides the top 10 names for boys and girls. The top five names for “other territories” show Ethan and Olivia in second place; Daniel and Sophia in third place; William and Ava in fourth place; and Michael and Emma in fifth place.

No Samoan names were on the top 10 for either boys or girls.

In 2016, it was Daniel for boys and Olivia for girls that ranked number one for baby names in “other territories”.

SSA also made clear that baby names for Puerto Rico and “other territories” — not included in the United States list — shows that Emma and Liam are America’s popular baby names for 2017.

“This marks the first time Liam has bested the boys, beating Noah for the top spot, and the fourth straight year for Emma,” according to SSA, which began compiling the baby name list in 1997, with names dating back to 1880.

It also says that at the time of a child’s birth, parents supply the name to the agency when applying for a child’s Social Security card, thus making Social Security America’s source for the most popular baby names.

SSA encourages parents to apply for a social security number for their newborn.
