Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga has declared next Monday, July 16, a holiday in American Samoa, in observance of Manu’a Cession Day — which many refer to as the Manu’a Flag Day — marking 114 years since the Manu’a island group was ceded to the United States and became part of American Samoa.

In his Manu’a Cession Day proclamation, the governor said, “We celebrate and honor our ‘Youth for the Future’,” — as the theme for this year, adding that the “most important building block for that future is the investment we make in our children today.”

And, “we invest not only in their education, but also in providing a nurturing home and a supportive community environment that encourages their growth and development into motivated and successful young people.”

The governor will be leading the ASG delegation to the one-day event in Ta’u village on Ta’u island.

Speaking at yesterday’s cabinet meeting, Lolo said this year’s celebration is simple with only the flag raising ceremony as the government is currently faced with other pressing matters.

The governor and a handful of ASG officials will be traveling by plane while the rest, including some cabinet members and others will be on the MV Manu’atele which sails tonight and returns next Monday evening.

While all ASG offices will be closed on Monday for the holiday, it’s business as usual for the majority of the private sector, including Samoa News which will publish its pdf version only, with updates found on samoanews.com.
