Man cuts himself after being rejected by woman at nightclub

Territorial Correctional Facility, TCF

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A 59-year-old man who used a small knife to cut his hands and chest was arrested during the weekend and taken to the Territorial Correctional Facility (TCF) for safety reasons.

Pulou Vili made his initial appearance in District Court yesterday morning before Judge Fiti Sunia.

Vili, charged with public peace disturbance, is represented by Assistant Public Defender, Ryan Anderson while prosecuting the case is Assistant Attorney General, Jason Mitchell.

According to a report from the Immigration Office, Vili is an overstayer, his ID expired in Feb. 19, 2016.

Sunia established Vili’s bail at $500. If he is able to cough up the money, he is ordered not to set foot in the nightclub where he was arrested. He is not to attempt or make any direct or indirect contact with the victim or the government witnesses who are mentioned in the police report.

The government claims that around 10:30p.m last Friday, police at the Fagatogo Central Station received a call from a concerned woman asking for assistance regarding a male who used a small knife to cut his hands and chest. Several cops responded to the call.

Upon arrival at the scene, police officers immediately witnessed a crowd of people at a nearby parking lot opposite the nightclub where the alleged incident took place in Pago Pago. Police were able to interview two eyewitnesses about what happened.

The first witness told investigators that the man — who was later identified as Vili — was making unreasonable noise in the night club. Apparently, he was trying to approach one of the ladies who works there, telling her that he wanted to be friends with her. The lady allegedly refused and told Vili to stop what he was doing. A few moments later, the eyewitness allegedly saw the defendant cutting his hands and his chest with a small knife.

The second eyewitness shared the same story to police. She said she was shocked to see the defendant’s actions.

When questioned by police, Vili explained that the reason he cut his body was because he wanted the lady to be his girlfriend but she turned him down. He allegedly said he did what he did to show the lady that he wanted her to be his girlfriend.
