Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — On June 6, 2026, police officers at the Fagatogo Police Station (FPS) observed a woman in distress walking towards the station to report that she was allegedly assaulted by her husband.

The suspect was later arrested and charged with:

Count 1: Assault in the Third Degree (DV), a class C misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for up to fifteen days, a fine not more than $300, or both imprisonment and fine;

Count 2: Private Peace Disturbance (DV), a class C misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for up to fifteen days, a fine not more than $300, or both; and,

Count 3: Resisting Arrest, a class A misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than one year, a fine not to exceed $1,000, or both.

The defendant was held without bail.

According to the court affidavit, the incident occurred during the evening of June 6, 2026, and resulted in a police search throughout the village before officers eventually apprehended the defendant following a foot pursuit.

Police became aware of the situation at approximately 8:18 p.m. when a visibly distressed woman arrived at FPS seeking assistance. Officers reported that the woman appeared exhausted, was perspiring heavily, and was crying when she approached the station. She informed officers that she wanted to report her husband for threatening her with a knife.

During an interview with investigators, the woman explained that the dispute began shortly after she received a telephone call from a female member of her church congregation. She claimed she stepped outside her family residence to answer the call, and while speaking on the telephone, she noticed that her husband was standing near a kitchen window listening to her conversation.

She later told investigators that her husband frequently accused her of being unfaithful and often expressed suspicions regarding her interactions with other people.

The victim continued that after ending the telephone call, she returned inside the residence and sat at the kitchen table with her husband. She then confronted him about listening to her conversation and questioned his actions.

The woman reported that during the discussion she observed her husband holding a knife and repeatedly tapping it against the table while appearing visibly angry. Feeling frightened by his behavior, she decided to walk towards the bedroom in an attempt to distance herself from the situation.

However, as she walked away, she realized that someone was following behind her. When she turned around, she allegedly saw her husband approaching while still holding the knife.

Investigators say the woman told officers that she challenged her husband by telling him that if he intended to kill her, he should do so because she was not afraid to die.

Moments later, an adult male family member who was inside the residence reportedly intervened. The witness later told police that he heard yelling, exited the  bathroom, and observed the defendant holding a knife while confronting the victim.

The witness stated that he immediately ran between the couple and attempted to remove the knife from the defendant's hand in order to prevent the situation from escalating further.

The defendant allegedly made a threatening remark to his wife during the confrontation, causing her to fear for her safety. The witness reportedly attempted to calm the defendant while encouraging the victim to contact authorities.

Fearing additional violence, the victim fled the residence and walked directly to FPS to seek help.

The victim informed investigators that she no longer felt safe around her husband and indicated that the incident was not the first time he had threatened her. She later provided police with a written statement detailing the events of the evening.

After interviewing the victim, officers went to several locations in Fagatogo in an effort to locate the defendant, but were unable to locate him.

Authorities then returned to the couple's residence but again found no sign of the defendant. Police units subsequently patrolled nearby areas throughout the village while continuing their search.

At approximately 9:07 p.m., officers received information from a neighbor indicating that the defendant had reportedly returned to the area shortly after police had left.

Police immediately returned to the residence and conducted another search. After he was not found in the house, they continued to search nearby properties and surrounding areas on foot.

During the search, police spoke with relatives and other individuals familiar with the family. Officers also made contact with the witness who had intervened during the confrontation. The witness later provided a written statement describing what he had observed inside the residence.

While officers continued searching, two members of the police team located the defendant near an abandoned structure adjacent to a church chapel.

According to police, the defendant fled on foot when officers attempted to approach him. Officers pursued him through the area before eventually taking him into custody after an approximately eight-minute chase.

Court documents further revealed that the defendant resisted arrest by pulling away from officers and attempting to prevent them from placing him into custody. Additional officers assisted in restraining him before he was successfully arrested.

The defendant was transported to FPS for questioning.

After being Mirandized, the defendant reportedly agreed to speak with investigators.

The defendant admitted that he had listened to his wife's telephone conversation because he believed she was involved in an affair. He also acknowledged that he was holding a knife while preparing food and admitted that he repeatedly tapped the knife on the kitchen table during the argument.

The defendant further told investigators that he followed his wife as she walked to the bedroom. However, he claimed that he did not say anything to her while following behind her.

He also confirmed that the witness stepped between him and the victim and removed the knife from his hand during the incident.

Court documents stated that although the defendant agreed to provide an oral statement, he declined to submit a written statement.

Following processing at the FPS, the defendant was transported to the Tafuna Correctional Facility where he remained confined pending his initial appearance in District Court.

The matter remains pending before the court.

The defendant is identified as a 51-year-old citizen of Samoa.

The affidavit was filed in the District Court on June 08, 2026.

As with all criminal cases, the allegations outlined in court filings remain accusations at this stage, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
