Island wide History Day competition continues today

Elementary students from across American Samoa competed at at yesterday's Island-wide History Day competition, sanctioned by the local Department of Education and held at the LDS Ottoville Stake Center.

This year's theme is Conflict and Compromise and the Fagasa group (pictured) entered a project entitled: "Birth and Death of the first Ku Klux Klan".

Dozens of students representing local public and private schools showed up with their projects that were entered into one of the following categories: group documentary, group exhibit, group website, research paper, individual documentary, individual website, individual exhibit, individual performance, and group performance.

Accompanied by their teachers, the students who spoke to Samoa News said they were excited to be part of this year's competition. Some of them reported working throughout the night to produce the 'winning project'. The overall winner will be representing the territory at the National History Day competition set to be held in Maryland later this year in June.

This year, only the first place winner for each category was announced. The results are as follows:

  • Group exhibit - Matatula Elementary
  • Individual exhibit - Pava'ia'i Elementary
  • Individual documentary - Uifaatali Peter Coleman Elementary (Pago)
  • Group documentary - South Pacific Academy
  • Individual website - Leone Midkiff Elementary
  • Group website - Manumalo Academy
  • Historical research paper - Manumalo Academy
  • Individual performance - Samoa Baptist Academy
  • Group performance - Pava'ia'i Elementary

The name of the overall winner - who will be heading to the East Coast - will be announced this Friday.

Some of the projects that were presented include famous historical events like the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, the Great Depression, and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Other less known historical events like “Blackbirding” (the enslavement of South Sea Islanders in Australia), and the Battle of the Overpass (Ford Motor Company vs. United Auto Workers) were also up for display.

Today, high school students are set to compete and tomorrow is the official awards ceremony, with the announcement of the overall winners.
