Holiday drowning accident claims life of man in Fatu ma Futi

Fatu ma Futi

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A man who drowned and died at Fatu ma Futi this past Monday, Presidents Day, has been identified as 57-year-old Simeona Taiivao from Pavaivai.

An eyewitness who spoke to Samoa News said Taiivao didn't make it, although CPR was performed, in an attempt to save his life.

According to an eyewitness account, Taiivao was at the beach with his wife and son. While out fishing, the boy saw his father "being tossed by the waves."

People heard the boy screaming for help and by the time Taiivao was brought to shore, by EMS workers and bystanders, it was too late.

According to the eyewitness, there were "no cops, no marine patrol unit, nada.”

He said the marine patrol unit just "skid on by," and they couldn't reach Taiivao because it was "shallow" and there was a reef in the way.

This is the second fatal drowning so far this year. Last month, Faga'itua High School student Melaiga Kome was presumed dead after several days of search and rescue efforts in Tula turned up empty.

Kome, 16, is said to have been swept out to sea while trying to save his two brothers who had been caught in strong currents.
