Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Aumua Amata welcomed a health care grant for American Samoa from the U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Department for nearly $1.75 million.

This discretionary Pacific Basin Grant totaling $1,745,233 is offered under the Health Center Cluster Program of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

“We welcome Pacific Basin health grants regularly, but this is a discretionary grant, meaning the federal agency looked at our needs and made a decision to award these funds,” said Aumua Amata. “Health assistance is always great news in American Samoa.”

HRSA is tasked with providing health care and support to geographically isolated populations. Dedicated to improving health care delivery in these areas along with groups otherwise economically or medically vulnerable, nearly 90 percent of HRSA’s budget is awarded through grants and cooperative agreements. HHS is led by secretary Alex Azar, and HRSA by administrator George Sigounas.

“I appreciate the HHS and HRSA, and their decision to award this grant to American Samoa, and the resulting health care benefits for our people,” continued Congresswoman Amata. “Special thanks once again to Seiuli Elisapeta Ponausuia as the project director in American Samoa who partners with HHS on these helpful Pacific Basin grants for our territory.”
