Fagota mo Taeao leads underwater cleanup of DMWR Malaloa Marina

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Last Friday, November 9th, members of the Fagota Mo Taeao planning committee volunteered to lead an underwater cleanup of the DMWR Malaloa Marina, to promote the upcoming Fagota Mo Taeao ("Fishing for the Future") Open Fishing Tournament.

The cleanup was led by local qualified diver volunteers Sean Gregg of Atlantic Pacific Marine Inc., and Valory Gregg of Pacific Maritime Surveys, in collaboration with co-managers Department of Marine & Wildlife Resources and the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa, with assistance from Dustin Snow. The underwater cleanup yielded over 80 tires, which were hauled to the surface by volunteer divers. 

According to Communications and Outreach Coordinator, Nerelle Que, the upcoming Fagota Mo Taeai Open Fishing Tournament - the 3rd Annual Fishing Tournament organized by the Sanctuary Advisory Council Fishing Committee - takes place this weekend, November 16-17.

Today at 9a.m., there is a captain's meeting for the fishing tournament at the Tauese P.F. Sunia Ocean Center.

Tomorrow and Saturday from 6a.m. to 6 p.m., the open fishing tournament takes place at the Malaloa Marina Dock. An awards ceremony will be held at the Malaloa Marina Dock from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Saturday evening and then on Monday, November 19th, a fish presentation will be made to Hope House.
