Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the death of a 41‑year‑old man whose body was discovered over the weekend, according to Commissioner of Public Safety Ta‘aga Saite Moliga. Police have identified the victim as David Golk of Ili‘ili.

Commissioner Moliga confirmed that investigators are still working to piece together the events leading to Golk’s death. He said the eight suspects were expected to be formally charged either yesterday or today, pending completion of interviews and review of evidence. Authorities have not yet released details about the circumstances of the assault or the possible motive.

For Golk’s family, the news has been devastating. His mother, Mrs. Golk, told local media that the last time she saw her son was on Friday afternoon. She said it was not unusual for him to leave home for a day or two, and she expected him to return as he always had.

But early Saturday morning, police arrived at her home with news no parent wants to hear. Officers asked her to accompany them to the hospital to identify a body found behind a store in Vaitogi.

What she saw there is something she says she will never forget.

“When I saw his face, I could hardly recognize him,” she said, describing severe swelling and bruising. “His face was black. I knew it was my son, but it didn’t look like him.”

She said the brutality of the attack has left her unable to sleep, replaying in her mind the suffering her son must have endured. “Since I learned of his death, I can’t rest. I keep thinking about the cruelty he suffered at the hands of those who did this,” she said.

Police have not released further information about the condition in which the body was found, nor have they disclosed whether weapons were involved. Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses and review surveillance footage from the area.

Golk’s death has shocked residents of Ili‘ili and Vaitogi, where community members say violent incidents of this nature have happened in the past. Many have expressed concern about rising tensions among youth groups and the need for stronger community intervention.

As the investigation continues, Commissioner Moliga urged the public to allow police to complete their work and to come forward with any information that may assist the case.
