Washington, D.C.— The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has awarded a grant in the amount of $5,400,000 to the Government of American Samoa for the purposes of runway/taxiway lighting rehabilitation.

“A strong transportation infrastructure is essential for our geographically isolated island paradise,” said Congresswoman Aumua Amata, “The issue of safety is a particularly important factor in determining the capacity of an airport. While maintenance and upgrades are a never ending process, these funds will go a long way in making sure Tafuna Airport continues to operate safely and efficiently.”

The grant awards $5,400,000 in discretionary funding for Pago Pago International Airport. These funds will be used to make needed updates and repairs to the runway and taxiway lighting fixtures. These lights mark the edges of the runways at night or during low visibility conditions.

“I want to thank those USDOT officials for their insight in granting these funds, which are greatly needed, as well as Taimalelagi Dr. Claire Poumele and her staff for helping to obtain this important funding for our home,” concluded Amata.
