ANNUAL DOE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The local Department of Education officially kicked off the school year 2017- 18 with its annual general assembly, held at the Tafuna High School gymnasium yesterday morning.

Hundreds of DOE employees, including bus drivers, teachers, employees of the School Lunch Program, volunteers from World Teach, as well as ASG department directors were in attendance.

Cabinet members were instructed to be in attendance, as the administration stresses the importance of teamwork in raising a child.

Themed: "Together We Succeed" the event was led by DOE Deputy Director Philo Jennings, with Rev. Iasepi Ulu delivering the invocation and the benediction.

Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga — a former educator — offered special remarks and referred to the theme, telling those in attendance that the common goal of all educators, administrators, and teachers, as well as those who provide other services, is to see each child succeed.

He also thanked all the departments and agencies for their continued commitment to the Adopt-a-School program.

Orientation for west side teachers is today, while the east side educators will go through orientation tomorrow.

The agenda for DOE this month, includes the opening of the Fagali'i Elementary School building on Thursday, August 31st, followed by the ASG Workforce Day at the Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday, Sept. 1st.

The American Samoa High School Athletics Association (ASHSAA) football season starts Saturday, Sept. 2nd

Labor Day, a federal holiday, is Monday, Sept. 4th and classroom teaching for the 2017-2018 school year for DOE students begins Tuesday, Sept. 5th.

PUPI LAFAELE ENROLLS AT FORT LEWIS COLLEGE

OFFICIALS FROM WSU VISIT ASCC

A group of six representatives from Washington State University (WSU), including its President Dr. Kirk Schulz, visited the American Samoa Community College last week, where the group took a tour of the campus and also made a presentation to ASCC faculty, staff members, and students.

The delegation included renowned football personality and WSU alumnus Jack Thompson, and City of Pullman, WA Chief of Police Gary Jenkins.

ASCC-ACNR Director Aufa’i Apulu Ropeti Areta, ASCC President Dr. Rosevonne Makaiwi Pato, Dr. Schulz, and ASCC Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Lina Galea’i Scanlan hosted the group at ASCC.
