Sen. Satele Galu Satele Sr appointed Tuiasina Sosene Esera of Tualatai county as the new Western District Governor, a position left vacant a few months ago following the passing of then Western District Governor Lualemaga E. Faoa, during the Western District meeting, despite several traditional leaders putting forth different candidates, if Satele did not take the position.

To begin, Sen. Tuiagamoa Tavai and Tualatai traditional leader Tuiasina Laumoli, motioned for Satele to take over the post of District Governor, as he is the remaining titular leader for the Western District.

Alataua county traditional leader Savali Talavou Ale, who is also the House Speaker, supported the motion, saying that if Satele didn’t accept the post, he requested that the District Governor post be given to Fuamatu J.V. Fuamatu, another traditional leader of Alataua county and one who has served the county for a long time.

Fofo traditional leader, Fai’ivae Iuli Godinet, who is also a senator, said he supported Satele being given the post however, if Satele declined, he suggested that traditional leaders discuss and select the next District Governor.

Tualauta traditional leader, Magalei Logovi’i, also a senator, said he supported the selection of Satele as well, but if Satele declined the post, he suggested that it be given to Tualauta county.

In his traditional speech, Satele said that for peace and harmony of the District, he could take the post of District Governor as well as his current post as senator, and he thanked the District for the honor, but suggested that the position of district governor be given to another person.

Thereafter, Tuiagamoa requested that the District Governor post be given again to his county of Leasina/ Aitulagi to complete the term of the late Lualemaga.

However, Savali humbly requested for Alataua to be given the post and recommended Fuamatu as District Governor, which was supported by Fai’ivae. However, Magalei once again asked that Tualauta be given the post.

With no one agreeing who to select, Tuiagamoa asked for the decision to be made by Satele. Satele then responded that his decision is for the District Governor post to be taken up by his Tualatai county, and in the future when the next term comes around, the Western District (as a whole) will decide then.

However, Savali disagreed saying that Satele declined to take the post when offered to him, but instead now has given the post to his Tualatai county.

However, Satele’s decision prevailed, with Satele saying what’s important is that a selection is made — Tuiasina Sosene Esera, who is from Tualatai, is the new Western District Governor.
