American Samoa veterans affairs and partners host mental health summit

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA —The Veterans Affairs Pacific Islands Health Care System (VAPIHCS) Faleomavaega Eni Fa’aua’a Hunkin Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC), in collaboration with government and non-profit partners, will be hosting a two-day summit focusing on issues impacting Veteran mental health.

The summit is slated for May 8-9 at the Malaeimi Mormon Stake Center. Summit organizers believe that strong communities help foster resilient individuals and this is one opportunity to do so.

VAPIHCS partnering agencies include: Department of Health, Office of Protection and Advocacy, Vet Center, Army Reserve Family Readiness Group and Survivor Support, Department of Human and Social Services, the Alliance Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, LBJ Tropical Medical Center, American Samoa Community College, and the Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The planning committee invites veterans, families, service providers and the general community to share with experts in the field of mental health. Topics will include: suicide prevention, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)/Mild Cognitive Impairment, PTSD, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) and Self-Care. Resource booths and hands-on opportunities will also be available that day.

The summit is free to the public and all are encouraged to register early to secure your seat.
