Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is already gearing up for the 48th Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police Conference, which will be hosted in the territory later this month, August 21-23 under the theme: “Preventing Drug Harm Within Our Communities.”

DPS staff members — uniformed cops and civilians — have been made aware of the upcoming conference, and what is expected of them.

In a media release, Superintendent Carl McLennan, Executive Director, Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police Secretariat said the Pacific Region “has seen an increase in the use and shipment of both methamphetamine and cocaine. To address this problem, the Pacific Police Chiefs are committed to cross jurisdictional co-operation and working together.”

This month’s conference provides Police Chiefs and Commissioners the opportunity to hear keynote speakers in the area of drug harm, as well as discuss regional and national approaches and responses.

According to the PICP Secretariat, keynote speakers will include case studies of multi-agency initiatives from around the Pacific region; and this will be supported by presentations from various law enforcement agencies, as well as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

Attendees for this year’s conference will include Pacific Regional Chiefs and Commissioners of Police from the 21 members of the Pacific Island Chiefs of Police, and key Pacific partner agencies.

Also in attendance will be Kim Jong Yang, president of Interpol; and Chief Paul Cell, president of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
