Washington, DC — Congresswoman Aumua Amata highlighted the Taiwan Relations Act, and gave remarks at a Capitol event celebrating 40 years of this important legislation last week.

“The United States has a robust friendship with Taiwan, and it’s important to all of us in the vast Pacific region,” said Aumua Amata. “To quote Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently, Taiwan is, ‘a democratic success story, a reliable partner, and a force for good in the world.’ The Taiwan Relations Act was signed into U.S. law in 1979, and is an achievement that has stood the test of time.”

The 40-year anniversary of this historic law was recognized today on Capitol Hill at an event including various U.S. dignitaries and Taiwan’s Representative to the U.S., Stanley Kao, an experienced diplomat. Congresswoman Amata appreciated the opportunity to join those observing the occasion and give remarks on the significance of this Act.

“A natural result of our free and open systems is to create opportunity,” continued Congresswoman Amata. “For instance, that’s why Taiwan has strong female participation in public offices and a commendable record on women’s rights. Let’s continue this progress in a world that values freedom, individuality, personal beliefs and expression.”
