Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Aumua Amata was pleased to welcome a federal grant of approximately $4 million for the American Samoa Department of Education.

This grant is through the Office of Head Start, a program within the Administration for Children and Families, which is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The discretionary social services grant, specifically $3,976,493, funds the Head Start efforts in American Samoa.

“Many thanks to Dr. Ruth Matagi-Tofiga for her leadership of the territory’s educational efforts, and particularly Milaneta Tinitali for her work on this important project,” said Aumua Amata. “Federal funds like these can help make a difference by offering opportunities in the islands that otherwise simply would not be available.”

“Thank you to all our teachers and education professionals for their involvement in the lives of our young people,” continued Congresswoman Amata.

The Head Start program, led nationally by Dr. Deborah Bergeron, promotes school readiness by offering multiple services, beyond just academic, to provide support for young children and their families at the beginning of their academic study years.

The Administration for Children and Families is led by Assistant Secretary Lynn Johnson.
