Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Aumua Amata welcomes a grant of $2.5 million from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT). This grant will be used at the airport in Fitiuta to reconstruct the runway lighting system. The runway lighting system has reached the end of its useful life, and its reconstruction will bring it up to FAA standards.

“This grant will allow us to ensure our airports comply with FAA standards for safety and quality,” said Congresswoman Aumua Amata. “It is imperative to keep our air service safe and reliable for the people of American Samoa.”

The Fitiuta Airport, an essential connection with Manu’a, is a general aviation airport designated as basic by the FAA’s National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS) report. The FAA is a federal agency within the DOT.

“Thank you to Taimalelagi Dr. Claire Poumele, Director of the Department of Ports Administration, for her work on these important services,” said Congresswoman Amata. “I would also like to thank the FAA and Transportation Secretary Chao for their attentiveness to this need on behalf of the people of American Samoa.”
